Maker: Toy Design & STEM (Ages 9-14)

You have been hired by ABC Toys to design and build new toys but you are not sure how to go about it! Where do you start? All toys - no matter how simple - involve a lot of engineering. Join us for this week-long activity as we discover the design and engineering process of making toys. Learn to use 3D modeling software (Tinkercad), discover simple machines, learn about circuits, examine existing toys to see if you can reverse-engineer them, and explore manufacturing tech like 3D printers, laser-cutters, and vacuum molders.  Projects and activities will depend on the age of the participants.

Activities may include:

  • Learning about materials and their properties
  • Designing simple push/pull toys and then adding linkages
  • Learning about budgeting when designing toys
  • Designing a simple website to market your creation

In this week-long workshop we'll explore different types of toys and expose your curious scientist to the manufacturing process they entail.  We'll explore the engineering design process as we refine and modify toy ideas. From designing your own toys to building ours you are sure to have tons of fun building and making with us.

We'll construct a model of the Solar System and compare planetary sizes, use play dough to create models of lava flows to analyse the layers that form a planet and much more. Journey into Space (Ages 5-7)

Calling all budding astronomers, astrophysicists and space enthusiasts. Follow in the footsteps of NASA Engineers as you discover the vital role technology plays in space exploration.We will  explore our stellar and planetary surroundings by showing them them what their sizes and surfaces really look like! We'll learn how planets, stars and galaxies are formed and why our night sky looks the way it does. We'll design landing structures for the moon and experiment with building rockets Students will learn how models are used to understand objects that are far away. Each student will create take-home projects and enjoy demonstrations of the movement of our Solar System and the Milky Way. Projects and activities will depend on the age of the participants

S.T.E.A.M for Beginners (Ages 4-6)

Join us for a week of hands-on making and creating.  Learn all aspects of S.T.E.A.M through hands-on experimentation and projects. This camp is a great way to introduce your children to hands-on learning experiences and spark their imagination. Students are encouraged to tap into their natural curiosity and embrace creativity. P

Sample activities may include:

  • Programming robots (no reading skills needed)
  • Discovering the wonders of chemistry - e.g candy science,  mixing potions, growing crystals
  • Building with straws and connectors to learn about tension and compression
  • Solve an engineer challenge such as designing houses (inspiring by the Three Little Pigs)
  • Experiment with projectile science as we make our own catapults and targets

This camp is a morning only camp.

Intro to Programming (Ages 6-8)(9:00am-12:00pm)

Whether or not you have programmed before, we are sure you will find something new in our Programming class.  The programming language has a graphical user interface, and basic concepts such as flow charts, loops, conditionals and structured programming will be introduced. Children will progress at their own pace - Time permitting we will control hardware such as Makey-Makeys with our new Scratch skills and develop our own apps.

Design-Create-Build: Laser Cutting for Beginners (Ages 9-14) (9:00am-12:00pm)

Make awesome projects using cutting-edge technologies as you learn some physics, chemistry, engineering, and math. You will have guided access to our laser machine to cut and engrave various materials to build a custom design of your own creation. New to design software or computers in general? No worries! We will teach the necessary skills and introduce campers to graphic design and sketching tools that experts use in real day-to-day applications.

Programming with Gamemaker™ (Ages 9-14)(1:00pm-4:00pm)

Have you ever wanted to write your own video games? From novice programmers who can use the simple drag-and drop interface to experienced designers  who can write their own code, Gamemaker™ is a great tool for you to experiment with.  You will design your own characters, develop your game plot and put it all together.  Together will  examine fundamental game design principles, discuss what makes a good game and what doesn't and then plan and program our games with Gamemaker™. Join us for this fun game design intro and catch the programming bug. Come see what you can create and share with your friends.

Robot challenges (Ages 9-14)

From Lego robotics to the mBot and Marty (our walking robot) we have robots that can kick, move, dance and most importantly obey your commands. Remember the robots will only do what you tell them to do. Join us for a week of fun challenges and competition where you will discover how sensors work, develop your programming skills and discover the amazing and versatile world of robotics. Work with a partner to develop challenges for other groups to conquer.  Think outside the box and put your imagination and innovation skills to work!

Robotics for Beginners (Ages 6-8)

Join us for a week of hands on fun as we explore the world of programming, building and the exciting field of robotics. Through a series of challenges, your child will learn basic programming concepts as he/she tries to make their robot follow a line, move an object and more. Participants will gain an understanding of how robots work and learn about electricity and circuits as well.

Working individually and in groups, students will develop  engineering and scientific skills as they learn to break problems into smaller components. Master the basic building blocks of the WeDo Graphical language, get introduced to Scratch and build upon your knowledge to solve more and more complex tasks.  Put all your skills together and see how well you do in our epic battlebot extravaganza!

Have you ever wanted to make your own video game, or create a cartoon or animated story?  Well, this is your chance! If you are just starting out you  you'll learn programming basics. If you are more than just a beginner have you gotten the programming bug? Be ready to learn new tools and tips and share ideas. Try your hand at Gamemaker, Roblox or AppInventor See how you can create your own games. Take your projects to a new level and expand your programming skills. Software challenges will be determined by the age of the participants.

Games however are not only built on computers and in this camp we will also make and build our own games. Students will work at their own pace and advance based on their interests.

Please note: This camp involves long periods of concentrated work seated by a computer. Participating must be able to process verbal and written instructions and work independently. Challenges and projects will be tailored to your child's level of experience and knowledge.

Inventing and Coding - Girls in S.T.E.A.M(Ages 9-14)

The MAKER movement has fostered and re-invigorated the hands on exploration of science, art, technology, and engineering. Discover the MAKER movement by joining this hands-on STEAM camp! Explore programming (Scratch, Gamemaker, AppInventor), computer aided design, electronics and more.  Do you have an idea you want to explore? Come build it. Then design a website to promote your invention. Using 3D printers, laser engravers, littleBits, Arduino based robots as well as hammers, screwdrivers, and wood, and come see what you can create. We hope to provide an encouraging environment for our female scientists, whether they are passionate mad scientists or just started a budding interest in STEAM fields. Our Makers will go home with new knowledge and skills that we hope will encourage them to continue the MAKER movement.

Rolling into Robotics (Ages 5-7)

Come explore the amazing world of robotics. We will design and build a small robot (no motors/electronics). During the week you will develop a basic understanding of coding. Play, tinker, explore and learn as you make Cubetto complete a variety of tasks. Using an Arduino controller, Cubetto, a robot designed specifically for children ages 4-7 is controlled through the placement of simple blocks. No typing, no screens. Calling all Builders, Engineers and Architects!! (Ages 6-12)

Calling all Builders, budding civil engineers and architects. Learn to think like an engineer as you design structures serving different shapes and purposes. Discover what forces come into play when we build tall buildings or design wide spans or engineer roller coasters. Experiment with such diverse building materials as paper, straws, wood and even spaghetti. Students will learn to identify different bridge designs and construction materials used in modern day engineering. They will work both individually and in teams to create  structures which will be tested to see how well they survive under different natural conditions.

Crazy Fun Science: Making , Designing, Tinkering (Ages 6-12)

It’s the end of summer and we saved the best for last! Join us for one last week of exciting science exploration, experimentation, and building! Designed around our favorite science projects from this and past summers, this camp will bounce between themes each day to make sure we highlight the best of the best. From the physics of ballistics, to light up bling, from ooey gooey chemistry, to the cutting edge of 3D Printing, we have tons of fun science to explore.
